Is the American public hopelessly caught up in phony issues contrived by the mainstream media?

Let's just say the media as a whole often understates the importance of some issues and overstates the importance of others. And sometimes they are limited to "official releases" and press conferences with government people who may not be as forthcoming with the truth as they should be.
